What is the best base for a concrete slab?
The ideal base for a concrete slab is a well-compacted subgrade made of granular material, such as crushed rock or road base. This layer provides stability, prevents shifting, and helps distribute the slab’s weight evenly. Before pouring, it's crucial to level the base and ensure proper drainage to prevent moisture accumulation under the slab. In some cases, a moisture barrier or geotextile fabric may be added to further improve durability and longevity. The base preparation can significantly affect the strength and lifespan of the concrete slab.
How thick should a residential concrete slab be?
The standard thickness for a residential concrete slab is generally 100mm (10cm), which suits patios, garden sheds, and basic home applications. For areas that need to support heavier loads, like driveways or garages, a thickness of 125mm to 150mm is often recommended. Reinforcement with steel mesh or rebar may also be needed depending on soil conditions and usage. A qualified concreter can assess the site and recommend the best thickness for structural performance and safety.
How long does it take for a concrete slab to cure?
Concrete slabs take about 28 days to reach full strength, but the curing process begins as soon as the concrete is poured. Light foot traffic may be possible after 24–48 hours, but heavy loads or structures should not be placed on the slab until it has cured for at least a week. During the curing phase, keeping the concrete moist and protected from extreme heat or wind helps prevent cracking and ensures a stronger, longer-lasting finish.
